Hi! I’m Kathy Monahan, and I’m from Uxbridge, MA. I’ve been a lifelong artist since I was very young, where drawing and painting were my first loves. I used to draw pictures of the neighbor’s pets, frame them with thrift store frames and sell them to the neighbors for a few dollars when I was 8 or 9. In high school, I’d do pen and ink drawings of rock bands and sell them to my classmates for $10. So I was an art business entrepreneur from an early age.
Throughout my young adult years, I expanded into black and white photography, mixed media, and Scherenschnitte, which is the ages-old art of papercutting. I fell head over heels in love with that art form and have created everything from invitation suites, to framed wall art, to custom greeting cards for every occasion for the last four decades. Several years ago, I decided to try my hand at calligraphy and was hooked. I realized that I wanted to combine calligraphy with papercutting to create unique art and have been doing that ever since.
I took a Sip & Script class a few years ago and really loved the concept. I’m really excited about the opportunity to be a part of this team and teach others this relaxing, mindful skill. I’ve found that most people see a beautifully calligraphed piece and think that they could never do that because they’re not “arty” or creative. I love challenging that mindset and watching people beam with pride when they realize that you don’t need to be arty to be able to create beauty.
